Formerly known as the "Fairfield Civil War Sesquicentennial Committee," officially sanctioned and appointed by the Borough of Fairfield, the Historical Society will now stand on its own and has a 501c .3 tax exempt non-profit status.
The Fairfield "Area" essentially consists of the school district, including Fairfield Borough, Hamiltonban Township, Liberty Township, and the parts of Liberty and Hamiltonban now called Carroll Valley Borough. Having established Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation, on February 12, 2015, the "Fairfield Area Historical Society Study Group" appointed officers of the Fairfield Area Historical Society. Named as President was Jack Inskip; Vice President - Dean Thomas; Secretary - Nancy Wenschhof; and Treasurer - Carroll Smith. The organization vows "to help preserve and protect our historical heritage. The Society will identify and acquire artifacts and information of historical significance to our area." With financial help from forty businesses, organizations, and individuals, the Sesquicentennial Committee undertook several public events commencing in April 2011. Additionally, the committee published the book "Fairfield in the Civil War" and created the Battle of Fairfield Medallion with the likeness of Medal of Honor recipient George C. Platt. In December 2012, the committee commissioned historian Tim Smith to do a study of the Fairfield town lots and dwellings during the Civil War. His results were published by the Adams County Historical Society as "Adams County History - Fairfield" Volume 19 in 2013. A large quantity of these 145-page books were purchased by the Fairfield group to use as a fundraiser for the Fairfield Area Historical Society. The continued success of the sales of both of the above books will be used to fund another local study--the settlement dates and construction dates of the 300 structures in Hamiltonban and Liberty Townships, identified on the 1872 Adams County map. |
